MSDS - Material Safety Data Sheet
What is MSDS
MSDS is a comprehensive document on the physical and chemical characteristics, toxicity, environmental hazards and possible hazards to the health of users of chemicals that must be provided to customers by chemical production or sales enterprises according to legal requirements.
At present, the United States, Japan, the European Union and other developed countries have generally established and implemented the MSDS system, which requires the manufacturers of hazardous chemicals to provide a safety instruction when they sell, transport or export their products. No matter in domestic trade or international trade, the seller must provide the legal documents of product description. Because the legal documents of chemicals management and trade in different countries are not available and the update cycle is not fixed, if the MSDS information provided is incorrect or incomplete, it will lead to legal problems.
In the United States, Canada and European countries, enterprises have set up hazardous chemicals management department or occupational health and environmental science management department to audit MSDS provided by chemical suppliers.
Importance of MSDS
The necessary documents of manufacturers and traders should be passed along the product supply chain. The personnel who contact or may contact the product must be able to easily obtain MSDs
MSDS should be provided to the customs and commodity inspection when the products are imported and exported. MSDS should also be provided to the relevant parties during transportation and storage
A standard and high-quality MSDS is not only an important embodiment of the company's strength, image and management level, but also can win business opportunities for enterprises

Relevant regulations
UN regulations
GHS (unified classification and labelling system of chemicals) requires the establishment of coordinated hazard information publicity, including labels and chemical data sheets (MSDS).
EU regulations - 1
REACH regulations require that when the product meets one of the following conditions, the supplier shall transfer SDS to the downstream along the supply chain:
- When the substance or preparation is classified as dangerous goods according to directive 67 / 548 / EEC or 1999 / 45 / EC, or although the preparation is not classified as dangerous goods, it contains a certain proportion of SVHC or other dangerous components;
- According to reach annex 13, substances are persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic (PBT) or highly persistent, highly bioaccumulative (vpvb);
- The substance was identified as SVHC for reasons other than the above conditions.
EU regulations - 2
CLP (EU chemicals classification, labeling and packaging regulations) stipulates that after december1,2010, substances must be classified according to CLP, and SDS for products as substances must contain CLP classification and labeling, and the classification information in Annex 1 of 67/548/eec (Part 2) shall be retained.
CN regulations
China's GHS is a regulatory system composed of regulations on the safety management of hazardous chemicals, measures for the registration and administration of hazardous chemicals, general principles for classification and hazard publicity of chemicals, regulations on the preparation of chemical safety technical instructions, and regulations on the preparation of chemical safety labels. It puts forward specific requirements and specifications for MSDS.
Details of a MSDS
1. Chemical product and company identification
It mainly indicates the chemical name, name, address, postcode, telephone, emergency telephone, fax and e-mail address of the manufacturer.
2. Composition/information on ingredients
Indicate whether the chemical is pure or a mixture. For pure chemicals, the chemical name or trade name and common name shall be given. For mixtures, the concentration or concentration range of hazardous components shall be given. Whether it is pure chemical or mixture, if it contains harmful components, the CAS number should be given.
3. Haxards summarizing
The most important hazards and effects of this chemical are briefly summarized, mainly including: hazard category, invasion route, health hazard, environmental hazard, combustion and explosion hazard, etc.
4. First-aid measures
It refers to the brief treatment methods of on-site self rescue or mutual rescue when the operator is injured accidentally, including the first aid measures of eye contact, skin contact, inhalation and ingestion.
5. Fire-fighting measures
It mainly refers to the physical and chemical special risks of chemicals, suitable fire extinguishing media, unsuitable fire extinguishing media and personal protection of firefighters, including: Hazard characteristics, fire extinguishing media and methods, fire fighting precautions, etc.
6. Accidental release measures
It refers to the simple and effective emergency measures, precautions and elimination methods that can be adopted on site after chemical leakage, including: emergency action, emergency personnel protection, environmental protection measures, elimination methods, etc.
7. Handling and storage
It mainly refers to the information of chemical operation, disposal and safe storage, including safety precautions, safe storage conditions and precautions in operation and disposal.
8. Exposure controls/personal protection
In the process of production, operation, disposal, handling and use of chemicals, the protective methods and means adopted to protect operators from chemical hazards. Including: maximum allowable concentration, engineering control, respiratory system protection, eye protection, body protection, hand protection and other protection requirements.
9. Physical and chemical properties
It mainly describes the appearance and physical and chemical properties of chemicals, including:
Appearance and properties, pH value, boiling point, melting point, relative density (water = 1), relative vapor density (air = 1), saturated vapor pressure, heat of combustion, critical temperature, critical pressure, octanol / water partition coefficient, flash point, ignition temperature, explosion limit, solubility, main uses and other special physical and chemical properties.
10. Stability and reactivity
The information about the stability and reactivity of chemicals is mainly described, including: stability, forbidden compounds, contact conditions, polymerization hazards and decomposition products.
11. Toxicological information
Provide toxicological information of chemicals, including acute toxicity (LD50, LD50), irritation, sensitization, subacute and chronic toxicity, mutagenicity, teratogenicity, carcinogenicity, etc.
12. Ecological information
The environmental ecological effects, behaviors and outcomes of chemicals are mainly stated, including biological effects (such as LD50, LD50), biodegradability, bioaccumulation, environmental migration and other harmful environmental impacts.
13. Disposal
It refers to the safe treatment methods for the packages polluted by chemicals and the chemicals with no use value, including waste disposal methods and precautions.
14. Transport information
It mainly refers to the classification and numbering of domestic and international chemical packaging and transportation requirements and transportation regulations, including dangerous goods number, packaging category, packaging mark, packaging method, UN number and transportation precautions, etc.
